A lot of people would like to travel. Most of them would like to travel cheaply but also have fun. This article proves it is possible. πŸ’΅ $150 for a weekend in sunny Greece? Sounds too good? And yet it is possible… although not always. How to find such opportunities? I will tell you how I did it and what, in my opinion, is the most important when organizing a vacation.

Something worth mentioning at the very beginning – if you want to travel cheaply, the only correct option is to organize trips on your own, not with travel agencies’ help. They charge a large margin for taking care of the entire organization for you, which, to be honest, is nothing very complicated at all.

A cheap flight is a key

The key to traveling cheaply is finding a cheap flight πŸ›© Maybe I will do a separate article where I will delve into details. The flight is often the most expensive part of the trip – especially if we are talking about trips not exceeding a week – but also the part where you can save a lot if you look well. Traditionally, a flight to Corfu from my city is around €100. We found a flight for €20. This price is sometimes dinner for one person in a restaurant in a big city. I paid more for the train to Krakow.

Map of our trip

First let me tell you a little bit about what we did, where we were, and how we had fun. During these 3 or two days spent in Corfu, we traveled only 155km (96mi) in total, including visiting virtually all the most interesting places on the island. What exactly did we see? Porto Timoni, Canal D’Amour, Cape Drastis, Loggas Beach, Angelokastro, and the main city of Corfu, the ancient Kerkyra (I also did YT videos) πŸ› Below you can find a map with the exact route of our trip and the attractions we saw and which we think are worth seeing! πŸ‘‰πŸΌ MAP

Is the entrance free everywhere?

When I was there, everything was free, but during the season, when there are a lot of tourists in Greece, entrance to some attractions is paid πŸ’° For example, a friend in September paid €3 to enter Angelokastro. Most things, however, probably remain free, except maybe parking lots. As tourists, you can expect that during the season, everyone will try to get as much out of you as possible; this is the climate we have.

How to live cheaply

Airbnb rental costs us €28 for two nights, which is a reasonable price for a room for two in a good location. Of course, the apartment had WiFi, water, and, unfortunately, the toilet, which, contrary to appearances, could not be used typically – but not to repeat yourself… information about what exactly that is, you can find in previous articles and this video 🚽🧻

Car rental

We rented the car from Thrifty (HERTZ), which serves customers directly at the airport. Of course, they required a credit card and a €1,500 deposit, but in the end, because we didn’t smash the car, the total rental costs are €45 per person and €15 for fuel. A total of €60 per head for the brand new gray Seat Ibiza with 100 horses under the hood – very bearable 🚘 The car was operational from start to finish. Small enough to fit into all Greek streets and not be afraid of every movement and turn, although sometimes it was crowded anyway.

Food and drinks

Greek food in Greece

We only ate lunch at the restaurant once. My dinner (chicken breast with fries and mini Greek salad) costs only €9 πŸ— which is close to Polish standards but still a bit more expensive. On the second day, we ate local fast food in the city: Greek pita – something like a Polish kebab πŸ₯™ The cost is only €3, and you can satisfy your hunger with something tasty.

Grocery shopping

We spent more than on food in restaurants on small items, i.e., chips, bars, fruit, and drinks, which were much more expensive than in Poland πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± In total, my purchases were around €18. As for two days, it is quite a lot. But we could not resist tasting local brands and flavors of products that are unavailable from where we come from.

Problems encountered

Perhaps it is not very cost related, but I found it worth mentioning as I did not include it in the previous article.

On the first day, after visiting the island, we wanted to go to the store and buy something to eat and drink for the evening and the next day. On Google, we looked for a store that is marked open and drove it. The first location is closed, the second is closed, the third is closed, and the fourth is closed. A bit irritated, we ended up looking for a shop, we decided that if there is something on the way, it’s great, if not, we will go back to the other side of the island, to the city. Fortunately, literally 100m (~300ft) from our Airbnb, a local store was open.

We also had an adventure with the tire πŸ›ž Something in the car started beeping on the road. It turned out to be a tire pressure indicator. We drove to the nearest local gas station. There was a tire inflator that was not fully working. We asked the staff for help, but it was not easy because he was at least 80 years old local Greek, flesh, and blood, and did not understand a word of English. Well, in the end, everything was a success.

Changeable weather was one of the main problems of the trip in my opinion. The first day was very warm. The temperature was around 23-25Β°C (73-77Β°F) 🌑 but there was not much wind. If you add to that the fact that we walked a lot to get to all these places, you might conclude that it was very hot. But on the same day in the morning, when we put it on, it was about 10 Celcius degrees (50Β°F) πŸ₯Ά and we managed to get quite cold, especially since the air conditioning in the room was not very good with heating. From 6 PM it got chilly again and we had to put on a sweatshirt. In short, that day I changed an item of clothing at least 3 times and it was all because of the weather. The next day was cool and cloudy, the temperature did not exceed 18 degrees, and at one point it even sprinkled with rain, and quite a cold and strong wind blew.

Summary

The total cost at that time was €136 or $ 147 or 630 PLN πŸ’Έ It was one of the cheapest, but also the best and most exciting trips I have ever experienced. My passion for traveling, exploring, and discovering new places and cultures began with her. I realized that the world is really beautiful, and you don’t have to be rich to see it. Why am I doing it now instead of allocating money for the development of, for example, my business? Because in 10 years I would regret that I would spend my youth and my best years on something that brought me only stress and money to pay off loans for new cars, and then I would probably not want to explore the world in this way, but I would like all-inclusive finally take a break from life. Everyone will choose their path, but I chose this one and I don’t regret it πŸ’ͺ🏼

I invite you to watch the last episode of the Greek series πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·, and preferably the entire series (only 3 episodes). I count on your support, likes, and comments so that I can create better and better content. Thanks to everyone who has survived to this point and I wish you many beautiful and cheap journeys: D Soon I hope that I will gather more valuable information with you, for example from my recently fulfilled childhood dream – a trip to the USA!
