After more than a year of planning, it finally happened. My road trip across the US has come to fruition. I traversed the entire states from Florida, Texas, California, Wyoming, and New York. The whole thing took a month, but I will outline the trip in another article. In this one, too, I won’t start with the first day but with what I think is the first fascinating place – Weeki Wachee Springs, in Florida.
Kayaking in Florida is a different world
We went there relatively early, in May, before the holiday season, so there were no problems with crowds. Florida is warm all year round, so it was at least 90°F then. This meant so much that you sweated even in the shade if you did nothing. Swimming the river (fortunately without a strong current) was a challenge, but the cool fresh water from underground springs was refreshing.
I bought a special pouch so that I could record some shots underwater, and I have to say that for an expense of about £5 on AliExpress, it was worth it. Anyway, see for yourself in the video.
Together with my Colombian friend and his friends, we set out to traverse the beautiful parts of the Weeki Wachee River. We couldn’t comprehend how beautiful this place was. The beauty of the Weeki Wachee Springs is primarily the natural surroundings. The springs are located in a lush, tropical environment, and the water is crystal clear. Visitors can see a variety of fish and other aquatic creatures swimming in the springs. It also provides a beautiful backdrop for photos and videos. Fish, manatees, squirrels. Trees and shrubs I have never seen before. An amazing experience. A wonderful adventure. Every look was awe-inspiring. At such moments it comes to a person that being among nature, traveling, and discovering the beautiful corners of the earth is what one needs for happiness. Or at least, in my case, it was. But it indeed reaches then that nature is essential in our lives.
Kayak fight and more!
However, it was not just nature. There were a lot of people everywhere, a lot of motorboats, as well as houses by the water itself. In places, you could find young people smoking pot and playing music on speakers. We were also listening to music, but I wasn’t the one playing it, lest it be. And, of course, as on any canoe trip, there were canoe wars and races. Everyone got wet at least once.
Some of the more exciting things that happened were, for example, seeing boats with dogs standing on the deck of the boat, a manatee swimming underneath us, and people jumping from the very top of a tree into the water (I also jumped into the water but it was probably one of the most pathetic jumps into the water in the world. Fear of heights over water works extremely hard). But I promise, most of these were moments where only nature was around, untouched by man, and we tried to enjoy it as much as we could. For all the pleasure of visiting Weeki Wachee State Park and kayaking on the river of the same name, we paid $45 a head each.
Let me add a quick fact here – the water in these springs cleans itself every 20 minutes or so. Isn’t it beautiful? Crystal clear water from underground springs, not requiring people who tend it… Nature is amazing. And it only works because human activity there is supervised, and they cannot pollute it.
Weeki Wachee was, for me, the most beautiful place I had seen in the United States before I left Florida… Has it changed later? Follow me on my social media and expect more articles than you will find out!
